NEVER FAIL DEVIL'S FOOD CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. flour
1/2 c. buttermilk
3 tbsp. cocoa sifted with flour
1 tsp. baking soda dissolved in 1 c. boiling water

Let soda and water cool before adding.

Cream shortening and gradually add sugar, mixing well. Add eggs, one at a time and beat well. Add dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk. Last add water and soda mixture. Pour into floured pan and bake 25 minutes at 350 degrees.
