AUNT MAX'S GINGERBREAD 
1/2 c. shortening
1/4 c. packed brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 c. light molasses
1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
3/4 tsp. ground ginger
3/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. boiling water
Lemon sauce, spooned over cake

Grease and lightly flour one cake pan. Cream shortening and brown sugar. Add egg and molasses, beat well. Stir together flour, spices, baking powder, soda and salt. Add to cream mixture alternately with hot water, beating after each addition and pour into pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes or until it springs back at the touch.

LEMON SAUCE:

Mix: 1 tbsp. cornstarch 1/8 tsp. salt 1/8 tsp. nutmeg

Add 1 cup water. Cook and stir until thick and bubbly. Stir in 2 tbsp. butter and 2 tbsp. lemon juice.
