HUSH PUPPIES 
2 c. cornmeal
1 tbsp. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
Hot shortening
1/2 lb. cheddar cheese, shredded
1 egg, beaten
1 1/2 c. buttermilk
6 tbsp. chopped onion

Mix all dry ingredients, add chopped onion and shredded cheese; then the beaten egg and buttermilk. Stir well. Drop by tablespoon into deep hot shortening where fish are cooking. When done, hush puppies will float.
