CINNAMON APPLE PUFFS
1 c. sugar
1 c. water
1/2 tsp. red food coloring
1 1/2 c. tart apples (4 or 5 med.)
1 1/2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 c. milk
1/4 c. shortening
2 tbsp. sugar
1/8 tsp. cinnamon
2 tbsp. butter

Boil sugar, water, and food coloring together for about 5 minutes. Peel apples and slice thinly. Place in a greased shallow 8 x 12 baking dish. Pour syrup over the apples.

Sift flour, baking powder, and salt together; cut in shortening until mixture looks like meal. Stir in milk to make a soft dough. Drop 12 spoonfuls of dough on top of apples and make a dent in the top of each. Fill with the mixture made of sugar, cinnamon, and butter.

Bake in 450 degree oven for 25-30 minutes. Serve with ice cream or whipped cream if desired.

I remember my mom making this and it was warm from the oven when we got home from school.
