Nobody mentioned Rudy's from Toledo, I remember the old man sitting on the last chair at Rudy's. My Dad went to war with the Rudy boys and he had to have the dogs after the bars closed and we always ate there at 2 am. Rudy's is the best in my opinion!

I am glad to read that "The Real Coney" rabbit hole still exists. Please don't forget to add Flint, MI to the places for original birthplace of the authentic coney sauce. Eaten on Koegel's Vienna hotdogs! No tomato, no beans. Nothing like them! Do the research. I wish I had one here now to eat.

National Coney Island has a taste all of it's own. It's from MI. I've lived all over the country and first thing we do when we get off the plane is to stop at a National Coney Island, NOT any other hot dog place. It has to be "NATIONAL" the taste is one of a kind. I've have Coney Island N.Y., Chicago Dogs IL., many other dogs around the country, but my heart belongs to National Coney Island.

New Castle PA hot dog sauce does not have any tomato paste in the ingredients and when the locals read this recipe you have, they will identify this fact: Not Coney Island, PO Lunch or Hudson Lunch. I live in New Castle, my husband worked for these establishments; I am not sure where you got this recipe which is more like Cincinnati Chile., just letting you know to save you the embarrassment.

Everyone loves this recipe. I make it all the time for Memorial Day and Labor Day. Best I've tried! I always add more prepared mustard to taste.

Hilarious! New Castle, PA has been given the title of hot dog capital of the world for one reason. It's chili. Best you will ever eat! Whether it's from Coney Island, P.O., Bill's, Jimmy's, and Red Hot. All from Greece. All way better than any place outside of Lawrence County Pennsylvania!!!

This recipe is so delicious and I haven't even added the celery seeds yet (don't have any on hand). I pureed the mixture after it was done cooking and it made it even better. Thanks for sharing!!!

I agree with the other posters. Double the spices. Too bland. Cooking for 15 minutes is not near enough. I kept adding beef broth for over 2 hours. The beef broth keeps getting absorbed. When it thickens too much, add more broth. It will become rich, deep red/brown when ready. Great choice of seasonings. Can add beans if desired.. I didn't.

The chili sauce? was made from beef hearts, with no tomatoes in Michigan. Saginaw or Jackson come up as the first locations to make it, but I believe that Saginaw was the earliest in Michigan. And that was in the '20's. To the comment about Nathan's, while I don't doubt, much, your work experience in Detroit, I do know that National Coney Island chili is the one that most restaurants would use if they were not making their own. Nathan's does dogs and has never been known for their chili.

The coney sauce in Michigan does not contain tomatoes. The American Coney Island restaurant in downtown Detroit was opened in 1917 by "Gust" Keros. It's still there. 98 years in the same location, owned by the same family. No one makes a better coney, and I only wish I could teleport myself back there to have one.
