MRS. D.'S BEST BROWNIES 
1 1/2 c. flour
2 c. sugar
3/4 c. cocoa powder
1 tsp. salt
1 c. shortening
2 tsp. vanilla
3 or 4 eggs (3 for chewy, 4 for cakey)

Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl and stir with a HEAVY wooden spoon until well blended. Spoon into a greased 9 x 13 inch baking pan. Bake at 325 degrees for about 25 minutes (reduce heat to 300 degrees, if using a glass pan).

This is a safe and easy recipe for supervised children to make since it does not require any melting of chocolate squares. Marguerite learned this recipe in the second grade!
