3 pkgs. dry yeast, dissolved in 1/2 c. lukewarm water with 1 tbsp. sugar 2 c. milk 1/2 c. sugar 1 tbsp. salt 1/2 c. shortening, butter 3 egg yolks + 1 whole egg, beaten 5-6 c. flour Dissolve yeast and sugar in lukewarm water and set aside to work. Scald milk and let cool to lukewarm. Then add sugar, salt, melted shortening and beaten eggs; mix. Beat in 3 cups flour. Add yeast mixture and mix well. Add enough flour to make a soft dough. Place in greased bowl, let rise until doubled. Make balls of dough and put on greased cookie sheet and let rise. When risen, push centers of balls down and fill with filling of your choice. Let rise again and bake at 400 degrees until brown, about 7 minutes. Grease tops when taken from oven and place on racks to cool. Makes 5 dozen. Cherry, pineapple, apricot, prune and poppy seed are favorite fillings. |
