ICICLE PICKLES
2 gallon pickles
1 pt. to 1 gallon water
2 tbsp. alum
2 qt. vinegar
3/4 to 1 box pickling spices, tie up in clear gauze or cloth
8 pt. sugar

Mix 1 pint salt to 1 gallon boiling water and pour over pickles. Let stand 1 week, stirring once a day. At end of weeks, drain and cover with boiling water and let stand 24 hours and drain again.

Mix alum and enough water (about 1 gallon) to cover pickles. Bring to a boil and pour over pickles for 24 hours and then drain.

Heat vinegar, sugar and spices and pour over pickles and let stand 24 hours. Repeat this last step for 3 more times, letting stand 24 hours between each heating. Drain and reheat to boiling again on the fifth day. Pack pickles into clean jars and pour the hot liquid over them and seal.
