OLD WORLD SAUERBRATEN 
1 (3 - 4 lb.) chuck roast
1/2 c. vinegar
1 c. water
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
4 - 5 whole cloves
1 clove garlic, chopped
1/2 tsp. ginger
3 bay leaves
1/4 tsp. thyme
2 onions, thinly sliced (optional)
1 tbsp. butter

Brown roast in butter. Add onions and brown. Mix remaining ingredients in small bowl and pour over roast. Simmer for about 3 hours. Sauce may be thickened for serving. Great served with noodles.
