SOFT SHELL CLAM CHOWDER 
1 qt. clams
1 1/2 c. chopped onion
1/2 c. salt pork or bacon, cubed
1 c. canned tomatoes
3 c. diced white potatoes
1 tsp. thyme
Salt and pepper to taste

Steam washed clams in 2 cups of water about 5 minutes for easy opening. Reserve clam juice. Chop body of clams to desired size, add onion, strained tomatoes, cubed meat and seasonings. Cover with clam juice and/or water and cook 30 minutes uncovered. Add potatoes and cook until done. Additional liquid may be needed.
