1 c. shortening
2 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
1/2 c. warm water plus 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. salt
4 c. flour

Cream the shortening, sugar and eggs beat well. Dissolve soda in water and add to creamed mixture. Sift in salt and flour. Drop dough by spoon onto cookie sheet. Make a hollow in center, put in one teaspoon of date filling on top with a spoon of dough on top of dates.
