Great recipe! I omitted the red hots... I am not brave enough to try them.

Hey, Angela, what a great dish. It was wonderful! However, when I baked it, it never turned into candied YAMS; it went into the oven as sweet potatoes and came out as candied SWEET POTATOES. What did I do wrong? All joking aside, yams are not sweet potatoes and sweet potatoes can never be yams. You can get sweet potatoes grown in the US but yams never grow in the US. They come from South America. So it may be good idea to change the name of this recipe to 'Candied Sweet Potatoes' and not perpetuate misinformation. Despite the fact that my sweet potatoes did not turn into yams, it was absolutely fabulous!

I used to use canned yams for years. Then one year thought I'd try fresh ones. What a huge difference! It's like canned tomatoes vs fresh ones. It's really worth the extra effort. I know it's a busy day but often someone will ask if there's anything they can do to help. I say, take up that offer! In this recipe the red hots are what drew my attention. I do like it though.

I made this last year for our church Thanksgiving potluck and it was a huge hit. We've since moved to a town 2 hours away and one of the families wants them again so bad, they've invited my family and I (including our dogs) to stay with them! My only hang up I had last year was they seemed too wet so i'll be draining all of the liquid this year..

Try 1/8 cup maple syrup and toasted coconut marshmallows. Do not use red hot's or cinnamon.

I too am curious about the red hots. Sweet potato casserole is one of my holiday favorites. Just boil real sweet potatoes until soft. Then they will literally slide out of the jacket effortlessly.

After bringing this dish to the past two Thanksgiving dinners, I was going to try a different yam recipe this year. When I mentioned this to the hosting family, I was told if I didn't bring this exact Red Hot dish, there would be trouble!

This is fine but: Drain Yams... Place in casserole dish... Add approx. 1 cup of brown sugar and put some butter and maple pancake syrup on it then bake it. Use the marshmallows if you want. Everyone will think it is from scratch.

For busy people here's great idea. Scrub sweet potatoes, kids can help, cook with skin on, drain , keep little water from potatoes.. let potatoes cool, skins will peel right off. mash & put in freezer. Can be done weekend ahead. Thaw day before thanksgiving. So great and easy to make great sweet potatoes. Can use any time. No need to add sugar either everything else is sweet. You won't notice neither will your family..

Just tried putting this recipe together, and was kind of confused. What do you do with the juice drained off the can of sweet potatoes? Do you put the juice in the casserole dish with the potatoes? Take this literally, and you'd only be putting the juice in the dish . . . . The other confusing thing is where it says to "Sprinkle candies and add cover top with marshmallows". Shouldn't that read "Sprinkle with candies and cover top with marshmallows"? I know I may be a bit picky but English and grammar are my pet peeves. Thank you!

This recipe is fantastic, this is a recipe that will be used for the fifth year in a row, it takes two days. I make two 15 lb. hams every Thanksgiving it is the one item that they are no leftovers. So now I am the ham man and it is what I am expected to make every year.
