NEW ENGLAND CABBAGE 
1 coarsely shredded head of cabbage
1 green pepper, cut up in strips
1 diced onion
1 lg. chopped carrots
1 tsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
2 strips bacon or butter for seasoning

Wash and clean vegetables. Cook on medium. Place bacon strips in big pot. Add vegetables and seasoning; add water. Cover and steam until desired tenderness (approximately 25 minutes after cooking begins).
