3/4 c. soft shortening
1 egg, beaten
1/2 tsp. baking soda
3/4 tsp. cinnamon
1 c. raisins
1/2 c. applesauce
1 c. brown sugar
2 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. cloves
1/4 c. chopped nuts (optional)

Cream the shortening and sugar until smooth. Add the egg and beat well. Sift the dry ingredients together and add alternately with the applesauce, blending well after each addition. Add the raisins and chopped nuts, if desired, and mix well. Drop by tablespoonsful on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes.
