GRANDMA'S DONUTS | |
1 c. tepid water 1 qt. warm water 2 tsp. lemon flavor or nutmeg 12 c. flour 3 pkgs. yeast or 3 tbsp. 1 1/2 c. sugar 2 tsp. salt 4 eggs 1 c. melted butter or oil Soak yeast in tepid water. While yeast is soaking, measure warm water in large mixing bowl. Add sugar, salt and flavoring. Add 1/3 of flour, beat with beater until smooth. Break eggs into batter and beat. Add shortening and yeast. Add as much flour as beater will handle. Stir in remaining flour with spoon. Dough should be firm enough to keep shape but not real stiff. Grease upper rim of bowl and with greased hand shape dough in bowl. Let rise until double in size. Turn out on floured counter, using part of dough at a time. Roll 1/4 inch thick, cut with donut cutter. Place on floured tray. Let rise until double. Fry in deep fat at 325-350 degrees for 1 minute on each side. |
