MOM'S BROWN SUGAR COOKIES | |
2 c. brown sugar 1 c. shortening 3 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla 3 tbsp. cream 3 1/2 c. flour 1/3 tsp. ginger 1 tsp. baking soda Cream together the sugar, shortening, eggs, vanilla, and cream to make a smooth batter. It is best to have the shortening at room temperature. Sift the dry ingredients and add to batter until a smooth even texture. Divide the dough, using about 1/3 at a time, and roll out on a well floured board until about 1/4 inch thick. Cut with cookie cutters into desired shapes; put on baking sheets. Decorate with sugar or sprinkle and bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. This is a soft dough so be sure to use sufficient flour for rolling. Keep the leftovers each time to mix into the next ball for rolling and cutting. This recipe comes from my childhood; when my mother kept our family together selling cookies after school, during the depression. It still is a family favorite. Makes 4 to 6 dozen. |
