Layer sliced fresh tomatoes and sliced onion in casserole (about 1 small onion for every 2 tomatoes). Sprinkle each layer with a small pinch of sugar and a little salt and pepper. Top final layer with a heavy sprinkling of stale bread cubes that have been tossed with more melted butter that you think is good for your figure and top that with a generous sprinkling of grated cheddar cheese and a bit of paprika. Bake at 400 degrees until hot and bubbling and golden, run under broiler if not brown under. Especially good as a side dish with baked ham.
