SHEPHERDS PIE 
Line a 9x13 casserole dish with mashed potatoes, top, sides and bottom.

Cook one pound hamburger browned with 1 medium onion.

1/2 c. bell pepper
1 beaten egg
1 c. frozen mixed vegetables
1 can stewed tomatoes
1 sm. can tomato sauce

Mix together and pour on top of mashed potatoes. Sprinkle 1-1/2 cups bread crumbs on top.

Bake at 350°F for about 30 minutes.

Neil, since you are a Brit, one would think you would use correct grammar. When you stated, "As a Brit this bears no resemblance to Shepherds Pie...", you misplaced a modifier. You are saying that the recipe to which you alluded is a Brit, when you mean, I assume, that you are a Brit.
