FAVORITE BUTTERMILK BISCUITS 
2 c. flour
1 tbsp. baking powder
2 tsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 c. shortening
3/4 c. buttermilk
1/2 tsp. baking soda

Combine first 5 ingredients, mixing well. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal.

Combine buttermilk and soda. Add to dry ingredients, stirring until dry ingredients are moistened. Turn dough out on lightly floured surface. Knead lightly 10 to 12 times. Roll dough 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with 2 3/4 inch biscuit cutter. Place on lightly greased baking sheet. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes. Yield: 10 biscuits.
