GUM DROP CAKE 
1 c. white sugar
1 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. shortening (3 cubes butter)

Cream well and add 4 eggs one at a time and beat after each.

Add:

2 c. applesauce
3 tsp. baking soda, dissolved in 1 tbsp. hot water
2/3 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. allspice

Sift and measure 4 1/2 cups of flour, take out 1/2 cups for the fruit.

Add:

3 c. to batter and beat

Then add:

1 lb. gum drops, cut up
1 lb. white raisins (or dark)
1 pkg. fruit mix
1/2 c. walnuts

Mix well with 1/2 cup flour. Add to the batter, put in oiled pans lined with wax paper. Bake at 300 degrees for the first hour, 200 degrees for the next hour.
