HERMIT COOKIES 
1 c. shortening
2 c. brown sugar
2 eggs, beaten
3 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 c. sour milk or buttermilk
1 c. raisins
1 c. chopped dates
1 c. chopped nuts

Cream shortening and sugar; add eggs and beat well. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with sour milk. Add fruit and nuts; drop from teaspoon onto greased cookie sheet.

Bake at 375°F for 15 minutes.

Makes 4 dozen.
