GUM DROP CAKE 
1 lb. sm. gum drops, cut into sm. pieces
1 lb. dates, cut fine
1 c. white raisins
1 1/2 c. nuts
2 c. sifted flour
1 c. butter or shortening
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. hot water
1 1/2 c. applesauce (sweetened)
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. salt

Put gum drops, dates, white raisins and nuts in a paper bag with sifted flour and mix. Cream butter or shortening with sugar and eggs. Add soda which has been dissolved in the 1 teaspoon hot water. Add the rest and beat mixture about 5 minutes, then add contents of paper bag. Mix thoroughly. Grease large cake pan (tube pan or loaf pan) and pour in mixture. Bake 1 hour at 300 degrees. Reduce heat to 250 degrees and bake 1 1/2 hours. Cool thoroughly and remove from pan. Be sure to take out all black gum drops.
