BASIC WHITE BREAD 
1 pkg. yeast
1 c. + 2 tbsp. warm water (105-115 degrees)
1 tbsp. + 1 tsp. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. shortening
3 1/2 - 3 3/4 c. flour

Dissolve yeast in warm water in large bowl. Add sugar, salt, shortening and 1/2 of flour. Beat with a spoon (wooden) until batter falls. Gradually add remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time. When you can, gather the dough into a rough lumpy ball that almost clings to the side of the bowl.
