HEAVEN AND EARTH 
1 lb. potatoes, pared, cut into thin wedges
1 lb. apples, pared, cored, cut into wedges
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
Salt & pepper to taste
Boiling salted water
2-3 tbsp. butter
4 slices crisp bacon

In a medium saucepan, cook potatoes in boiling salted water until tender; set aside. In same saucepan, place apples and small amount of water. Cook about 10 minutes until apples are soft; drain. In a 1 quart buttered baking dish, alternately layer potatoes and apples, distributing butter throughout and sprinkling with cloves, salt and pepper. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes. Top with bacon and serve immediately.
