GRANDMA'S BUTTERMILK SPICE DOUGHNUTS | |
1 c. sugar 2 eggs, well beaten 1/4 c. softened vegetable shortening 4 c. flour 2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. nutmeg 1/4 tsp. cinnamon 1 c. buttermilk Gradually add sugar to beaten eggs, beating well after each addition. Beat in shortening. Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and spices. Add dry ingredients to sugar mixture alternately with buttermilk mixing well after each addition. Chill dough. Turn dough onto floured pastry cloth or board. Knead 3 or 4 times to form a ball. Cut in half. Roll each ball 1/4 inch thick. Cut with sharp, floured 2 3/4 inch cutter. Let stand 5-10 minutes. Fry and drain on paper. Dip in glaze or frost. Makes about 36. |
