IRENE ARMER'S GINGERBREAD 
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. molasses
1 egg
1 tsp. salt
2 1/2 c. flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 c. hot water (add last)

Cream together sugar, shortening, molasses, egg and salt. Add flour, soda and spices. Add hot water last. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 25-30 minutes. Serve warm topped with whipped cream or Cool Whip.
