APPLESAUCE CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 egg
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 c. unsweetened applesauce

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Nuts and raisins can be added to the flour mixture of dry ingredients mixed together in a bowl.

Cream shortening and sugar, beat in egg. Add flour mixture and applesauce alternately adding some of the flour last. Put in a loaf pan or two small cake pans and bake until brown on top and a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Cake rounds take approximately 25 minutes (for two); a loaf will take 40-55 minutes to bake. (Don't go by time; bake until Cake Tests Done).

FROSTING FOR CAKE:

3/4 c. brown sugar
1/4 c. butter
1 tbsp. Crisco
1/4 c. milk

Boil together until it's thick, slightly less than a soft ball, a small amount dropped from a spoon into cold water. Cool and add powdered sugar to thicken to spread on cake.
