APPLESAUCE CAKE 
2 c. sifted cake flour
1 tsp. baking soda
3/4 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar, firmly packed
1 egg
1 (15 oz.) can sweetened applesauce
3 tbsp. vinegar
1 c. raisins, soaked to plump

Sift flour, baking powder, salt and spices together; set aside. Cream shortening until soft and smooth. Add sugar to shortening gradually, creaming each addition until light and fluffy. Add egg and beat until very light. Combine applesauce and vinegar and add alternately with dry ingredients. Stir in raisins. Turn into an 8x8x2 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

BROILED WALNUT FROSTING:

2 1/2 tbsp. butter
1/2 c. brown sugar, firmly packed
2 tbsp. cream
1/2 c. chopped black walnuts

Melt butter; add remaining ingredients and blend. Spread on top of Applesauce Cake. Place under broiler, 3 to 4 inches from heat, and broil until bubbly.
