BUTTERMILK BISCUITS 
1/3 c. shortening
1 2/3 c. sifted flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
1 c. buttermilk
1/2 tsp. baking soda

Cream shortening and sugar. Sift flour, baking powder, salt and cream of tartar together. Blend buttermilk and soda. Add dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk mixture to creamed mixture. Blend well.

Roll out on lightly floured board; cut with biscuit cutter. Place biscuits on baking sheet. Bake at 475 degrees for 10 minutes. Yield: 20 biscuits.
