1 qt. syrup (mixed Karo and 1 c. molasses to make a quart) 1 lb. brown sugar 1 lb. butter 1/2 lb. lard Boil together for 15 minutes. Cool and add: 1 1/2 tsp. cloves 1 tsp. allspice 1 tbsp. baking soda 4 tsp. cinnamon Anise Cardamom 13 c. flour Rub off waste of anise seed and crush on board with rolling pin to fine powder. Crush cardamom in same way. Liquid anise or already ground cardamom may be used. The dough should be as thick as can be handled or mixed with spoon. Freeze or chill. Roll some dough out - cut with cutters. Some add citrus, candied fruit and raisins (ground). Can be made in a roll and sliced. FROSTING: 2 c. sugar 2 c. water, boiled Let cool 5 minutes and add confections sugar to get right consistency. |
