BISCUIT DOUGH 
3 c. flour
4 1/2 tsp. baking powder
3/4 tsp. salt
1/2 c. sugar (or more to taste)
1 c. shortening
1 c. milk
Enough flour to work dough

The best shortcakes are made with biscuit dough. Sift together the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar.

Cut in butter or shortening. Add milk. Roll out into a big biscuit and use a cutter to make smaller biscuits (the best ones are thicker in order to cut in half). Bake at 450 degrees until lightly brown.
