FRENCH CAKE 
1/2 lb. sweet butter
2 c. sugar
3 c. cake flour, sifted with 2 tsp. cream of tartar
4 eggs, unbeaten
1 c. milk
1 tsp. baking soda dissolved in 1 tbsp. hot water

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, flour and milk, ending with soda mixture. The only thing you need an electric mixer for is the butter and sugar. Divide into 3 greased 8 inch round cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees about 20-25 minutes.

FROSTING:

1 c. milk
1 egg
1/2 c. sugar
2 tbsp. flour
1 tsp. vanilla

Place on fire and boil until custard forms. Take off fire and let get real cold. Then pour into following mixture.

Cream: 4 tsp. powdered sugar

Blend until light consistency and spread between layers and top of cake.
