LAYERED VEGETABLE SALAD 
1 head lettuce, broken into pieces
1 c. cut up celery
1/4 c. cut up onion
1 sm. can water chestnuts, drained, sliced
2-3 hard cooked eggs, chopped or sliced
1/2 c. cut up green pepper
1 pkg. frozen peas, thawed, not cooked
2 c. mayonnaise
2 tbsp. sugar
1/4 lb. grated cheese
10 slices bacon, chopped & crisped

Use a large bowl, starting with lettuce, make layers of all ingredients down to mayonnaise. Mix mayonnaise and sugar. Put on top of salad, sprinkle with grated cheese and bacon pieces. Cover and refrigerate 24 hours. Toss gently. 8 to 12 servings.
