SODA PUFFS 
2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. vegetable shortening
1/2 tsp. baking soda
3/4 c. buttermilk

Mama mixed this with her hand in her biscuit pan, which was white enamel with a red rim. She turned the soft dough out on a floured bread board and patted it out, folded and patted again. Repeat several times to make the biscuits flaky. Finally, she rolled the dough out about 3/4 inch thick, cut the biscuits out with a bit cookie cutter and baked them in a very hot oven until browned.
