BLACK WALNUT CAKE 
1 c. butter
3/4 c. Crisco
6 eggs
3 c. sugar
1 tsp. black walnut flavoring
4 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. milk
1 c. black walnuts

Cream butter, sugar, and Crisco; add 1 egg at a time, beating after each addition. Sift flour, salt, and baking powder 3 times and add to creamed mixture. Add milk alternately with ingredients. Save a little flour to roll walnuts in. Add flavoring and walnuts; mix well. Bake in tube pan 1 hour and 15 minutes at 300 degrees.

CARAMEL FROSTING:

1/2 c. butter
1 c. brown sugar, packed
1/4 c. milk
1 3/4 to 2 c. sifted confectioners sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Melt butter in pan over low heat. Add brown sugar, stirring constantly for 2 minutes. Add milk, stirring until it boils. Set aside to cool, then add powdered sugar to spreading consistency; add flavoring.
