SKILLET CARAMEL CRISPIES 
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. butter
1/4 c. finely chopped nuts, optional
24 (2") bread squares (day old bread)

Melt brown sugar and butter together in small saucepan. Boil 2 minutes. Add nuts. Remove from heat.

Dip bread squares in hot brown sugar mixture and fry in buttered sugar mixture and fry in buttered skillet over medium heat until golden and caramel like on both sides. Turn every 2 or 3 minutes while browning. Total time for pan- frying is 8-10 minutes. (You can dip more squares in caramel that melts off into skillet during cooking.) Cool on racks. Makes 24.
