Gather the petals of roses and other sweet smelling flowers in early morning while the dew is still on. Spread the petals on a screen or a piece of paper to dry off. Dampness may cause molding. Place petal in a stone or china jar which has a well fitting lid, sprinkling each 1/2-inch layer of petals with salt. It is well to use a one-gallon jar, and to fill it halfway, as the amounts given below are for this amount of dried petals. Set in a cool place for 10 days, stirring every day.
At the end of 10 days, mix together 1 ounce each of ground cloves, allspice and cinnamon. Turn petal mixture out of jar, sprinkle bottom of jar with spice mixture and a layer of petal mixture and sprinkle with spice and so on until petals and spices have been used up. Set jar in a cool place for 3 weeks. This is the stock or base for your "rose jar."
At the end of 3 weeks and the final step in preparing your "rose jar, " have assembled 1/4 ounce each of mace, nutmeg, allspice and cloves; 1/2 ounces cinnamon, 1 ounce orrisroot, 4 ounces lavender flowers, 1 ounce lemon verbena, 1 ounce rose geranium leaves and any other spice or dried and powdered sweet scented leaves. (You can get these from your druggist.) Again, replace in jar in alternate layers of spice and stock, packing rather firmly. Jars should only be filled halfway and each jar should have a well-fitting lid. Over and in each packed jar place about 1 ounce of any good cologne, taking care not to make the mixture too wet. Open the jar for about a half hour and it will scent the entire room. A rose jar made in this manner 32 years ago is still fragrant.
