MOTHER'S APPLE DUMPLINGS | |
2 2/3 c. flour 1 tsp. salt 1 c. Crisco 6 tbsp. water Measure flour into mixing bowl. Cut in shortening until mixture is coarse textured. Sprinkle in water a tablespoon at a time. Toss with a fork, work dough into a firm ball with your hands, then divide dough into 6 equal portions. As you make the dumplings roll each portion into a square. DUMPLINGS: Pare and core 6 medium apples (cooking apples). Mix together: 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon Place 1 apple on a square of pastry. Fill cavity with sugar and cinnamon mixture. Brush with melted butter. Moisten points of pastry with water and bring opposite points up over apple and press together to seal. Place a little apart in oblong pan or baking dish. Pour syrup around dumplings. Bake immediately for 40 to 45 minutes in a hot 425 degree oven. SYRUP: 1 c. sugar (1/2 c. white & 1/2 c. brown if desired) 2 c. water 3 tbsp. butter 1/4 tsp. cinnamon Boil together for 3 minutes. |
