INDIAN FRY BREAD | |
6 c. unsifted flour 2 tbsp. baking powder 6 tbsp. shortening 2 3/4 c. lukewarm water 1 tbsp. salt 1/2 c. powdered milk 6 tbsp. shortening In large bowl combine flour, salt, baking powder and dry milk. Add shortening with fingers. Add water to make soft dough, knead thoroughly for 5 minutes, adding enough flour so the dough is not sticky, pinch off ball of dough about the size of an egg, shape it round then flatten it gradually stretching it to about 1/4-1/2 inch thick. In a hot frying pan or electric skillet have 1-2 inches shortening. Do not use oil as it smokes before it gets hot enough. Drop dough in and fry it to light brown on one side and then turn over to fry on the other side. Drain on paper towel. Makes 24-36 pieces. |
