WALDORF ASTORIA CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 tsp. cocoa
1 tsp. salt
2 1/4 c. cake flour (no substitute)
2 eggs
2 oz. red food coloring
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vinegar

Cream shortening and sugar; add eggs. Make paste of cocoa and food coloring; add to sugar mixture. Add buttermilk alternating with flour and salt; add vanilla.

Put soda in vinegar (hold over bowl when doing this). Pour into 3 cake pans and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Do not use mixer with this recipe.

FROSTING;
3 tbsp. flour
1 c. milk

Cook until thick and cool with cover on. 1 tsp. vanilla 1 c. butter

Cream until fluffy; add to cooled milk mixture until consistency of whipped cream and blend. Frost only tops of cooled cakes.
