COLONIAL INNKEEPING PIE 
1 1/2 squares unsweetened chocolate
1/2 c. water
2/3 c. sugar
1/4 c. butter
2 tsp. vanilla, divided
1 c. sifted flour
3/4 c. sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 c. soft shortening
1/2 c. milk
1 egg
Unbaked 9" pie shell with high rim
1/2 c. chopped walnuts

Melt chocolate in water. Add 2/3 cup sugar. Bring to boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat; stir in butter and 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla. Set aside. Mix and sift flour, 3/4 cup sugar, baking powder and salt. Add shortening, milk and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. Beat 2 minutes; add egg and beat 2 minutes. Pour batter into pie shell. Stir chocolate sauce and pour carefully over batter. Sprinkle top with nuts. Bake in 350 degree oven for 55 to 60 minutes or until cake tester inserted in center comes out clean.
