1/2 c. lard
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
3 tbsp. cocoa
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. red food coloring
Hot coffee (enough to make a thick mixture)
1 7/8 c. flour
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda

Cream together lard and sugar. Add eggs and mix. Mix cocoa, vanilla, and red food coloring. Add enough hot coffee to make at thick mixture. Combine with sugar mixture. Dissolve soda in buttermilk. Add flour and milk alternately to batter. Bake in two 8 inch layer pans at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until done.

ICING:

1 lb. box powdered sugar
3 tbsp. cocoa
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. red food coloring
1 stick butter
4 tbsp. hot coffee

Mix together and beat well. If the mixture is too thick, add a small amount of cream.
