APPLE ROLL 
1 stick butter
2 c. water
1 1/4 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
3 1/2 c. apples
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 1/2 c. self-rising flour
3 tbsp. shortening

Heat oven 350 degrees. In 9x9 inch pan add butter, water, sugar and vanilla. Let this mixture get hot (stir occasionally).

Make pastry with flour and shortening, using enough milk to moisten flour until it will be stiff. Chill.

Roll pastry into large circle. Sprinkle with apples, brown sugar and cinnamon. Roll this up as you would a jelly roll. Cut in 1 1/2 inch slices and drop into hot mixture. Cook real slowly until golden brown (about 1 hour). Serve warm with ice cream.
