RAISIN-SPICE SQUARES 
2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. raisins
2 c. water
1 egg
1/2 c. vegetable shortening
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9x13x2 inch baking pan. Sift flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt onto waxed paper.

Boil raisins rapidly in the 2 cups water in an uncovered medium saucepan for 10 minutes. Transfer raisins and their liquid to large bowl. Cool to lukewarm. Stir in egg, then shortening and sugar, then flour mixture. Add nuts. Turn into prepared pan.

Bake in preheated moderate oven for 25 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool clean in pan on wire racks. Frost with Orange Frosting, cut into squares. Makes 24 squares.

ORANGE FROSTING:

Beat 2 cups sifted confectioners' sugar, 2 tablespoons orange juice and 1 tablespoon melted butter in bowl until smooth and spreadable.
