GRANDMOTHER'S APPLE SLICES | |
1 egg, separated 2 1/2 c. flour 1 c. lard 1 tbsp. sugar 1 tsp. salt 2/3 c. milk 1 c. crushed corn flakes 12 lg. peeled, sliced apples 2 tsp. lemon juice 1 1/2 c. sugar 1 tbsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. nutmeg 1. Put egg yolk in measuring cup and add milk up to the 2/3 cup line. Stir slightly. 2. Cut lard into flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1 teaspoon salt mixture. 3. Add liquid to flour mixture and mix for pie crust. 4. Roll out 1/2 of the dough to fit a 17"x11" jelly roll pan. This is bottom crust. Roll other half of dough for top and set aside. 5. Spread over bottom crust the corn flakes, sliced peeled apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice. 6. Cover with top crust. (Do not slit crust.) 7. Beat egg whites until stiff. Dab over crust. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. 8. When cool drizzle over top in ribbon streaks an icing made of 1/2 cup powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon butter and enough milk to give frosting a thin consistency. 9. Cut in squares and serve with ice cream. |
