1 c. cornmeal
1 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1/2 c. sugar
1 tbsp. shortening (Crisco)
1 1/2 c. buttermilk, combined with 1 tsp. baking soda
9 inch square pan

Stir ingredients only until moistened. If you don't have buttermilk, make sour milk: 1 1/2 tablespoons vinegar plus milk to make 1 1/2 cups. Bake at 350 degrees for about 20 to 25 minutes.
