GINGERBREAD COOKIES 
1 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. ground cloves
2 tbsp. vinegar
5 c. all-purpose flour, sifted
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tbsp. ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 c. molasses
1 egg

Thoroughly cream shortening, sugar, and salt. Stir in eggs, molasses, and vinegar. Beat well. Sift dry ingredients, stir into molasses mixture. Chill 3 hours.

On lightly floured surface, roll out to 1/8 inch thick. Use gingerbread boy and girl cookie cutters. Place on greased cookie sheet. Decorate, if desired. Bake at 375 degrees for approximately 5 minutes. Makes 5 to 6 dozen, depending on size of cookie cutter.
