SELF FROSTED CAKE 
1 1/4 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
1 egg + 1 egg yolk
1/2 c. sour milk or buttermilk

Sift flour, baking powder, soda, salt and spices together. Cream shortening until light, add sugar and continue creaming. Beat in egg and egg yolk. Add flour mixture and sour milk alternately. Beat until smooth after each addition. Pour batter into greased and floured 8 inch square pan.

Make frosting: Beat remaining egg white until stiff - then add 1/2 cup brown sugar gradually and continue beating until a meringue is formed. Spread over unbaked cake batter. Sprinkle 1/2 cup chopped nuts. Bake at 350 degrees about 30 minutes.
