APPLE PAN DOWDY 
2 qts. sliced apples
1/2 c. dark Karo or molasses
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 c. light brown sugar
1/2 c. water
3 tbsp. butter

PASTRY CRUST:

2 c. flour
3 tbsp. lard
1 tsp. baking soda
1 heaping tsp. cream of tartar
Milk enough for soft dough
1/4 tsp. salt

Mix sugar and spices. Add syrup and water. Pour over apples in casserole. Mix all together, dot with butter. Cover tightly with a pastry crust. Bake at 425 degrees for 30 minutes, then cut the crust into the apples. Return to oven and bake for 1 1/2 hours at 350 degrees. Serve with butter or cream. Can reheat if lucky enough to have any leftover!
