MATIE BEDNAR'S DATE PUDDING 
2 c. pitted dates, cut up
1 tsp. baking soda
1 lg. tbsp. butter
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
2 tsp. baking powder
2 c. sugar
1 1/2 c. flour
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Boil 1 cup water; add 1 cup cut dates. Add 1 teaspoon baking soda. Stir and let stand.

Mix butter, egg, vanilla, baking powder, 1 cup sugar and flour. Add to water, date and soda mixture. Bake 25 to 30 minutes at 350 degrees.

GLAZE: Boil 1/2 cup water. Add 1 cup sugar. Add nuts and 1 cup cut dates. Boil until dates cook up. Spread evenly over cake. Serve with whipped cream.
